A selection in photoshop is part of an image that is highlighted (selected) in order to remove, add, move, or affect it in any way. There are a variety of tools that you can use to make selections: magic wand, quick selection, magnetic lasso, polygon lasso, the marquee and the regular lasso are just a few of these useful tools. They have a multitude of uses, for example, the magic wand is a tool used to select matching colors, or colors that are similar. Or, the magnetic lasso, which attaches itself to the borders of the colors, and then selects the edges of the area of the image. You can also select an image to move it from one image to another. For example, if you wanted to move a duck from one image to another, you could highlight (select) it and then move it to a different image.
