Writing and Hiking New England
Writing clearly, effectively, persuasively—well, that’s a skill we all need. But how do you acquire that skill? For almost a decade, we have offered a writing camp on the Williams College campus that gives you an opportunity to improve your writing skills in a small class (12 students) with an experienced teacher. The class meets in the morning (when everyone is fresh) and works hard for three hours—a significant, sustained engagement with the coursework. We can’t write all day, so come the afternoon it’s time to get outside. And what an outside it is: the Berkshires and Vermont’s Green Mountains are ideal for hikes. Of course, the first hikes are shorter and easier, but working at it everyday soon increases everyone’s skills and fitness—yours, too.

Arabic Summer Academy
Academic Summer Program
he STARTALK Arabic Summer Academy provides students with an introduction to Modern Standard Arabic and Arab culture. It is designed for students who have never studied Arabic before and begins with an introduction to Arabic sounds and letters. The teaching and learning emphasizes the functional use of Arabic and communication in context through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students acquire enough familiarity with the Arabic language and culture to interact with Arabic speakers at a basic level (Novice Mid to Intermediate Low according to the ACTFL guidelines). The curriculum is based on the methods of the Marhaba! high school Arabic curriculum. Students finish the course with greater curiosity and sensitivity towards the Arabic-speaking world through cultural encounters in classes, co-curricular activities and field trips. In addition to beginning Arabic for students with no prior knowledge of the language, we also offer levels of progressively advancing Arabic for students who have a background in the language or have graduated from previous summers. In these classes, students will increase their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through songs, videos, and other culturally authentic materials. Additionally, these students take on a leadership role in the Academy, both in their own classes and through cross-level cultural club meetings. Students with prior knowledge of Arabic, either from growing up with the language or from other school programs, should contact the Director for placement at the proper level.

Intensive Studies
CTY’s Intensive Studies is designed for students who are ready for intense college-level course work and accelerated study in specific disciplines. These three-week courses engage students in the same amount of material that would normally be covered in a semester-long college course or a year-long high-school course. CTY’s Intensive Studies courses fall into two categories: special topics courses that are not offered in high school and fast-paced high school courses. Intensive Studies courses explore more sophisticated theoretical material and proceed at a faster pace than do courses in the Academic Explorations program. A number of CTY’s Intensive Studies courses also have prerequisites. Students who thrive within such a focused setting strengthen their critical and analytical thinking skills and have the opportunity to acquire specialized knowledge in their chosen fields of study.

Academic Explorations courses emphasize a lively exchange of ideas and problem solving; informed discussion rather than lecture is the norm, and students often have opportunities to present their work to the class. In these courses, students engage in a process of discovery as they apply concepts and theories to real world situations and become more informed, learned individuals in the process. Courses in the Academic Explorations program are taught at a level equivalent to an advanced high school or introductory college level course, and most courses do not have prerequisites or require any prior knowledge of a specific topic. As students are exposed to new fields of academic inquiry, they benefit from focused, individualized instruction and from pursuing a subject in-depth with peers who share their interests and abilities.

Civic Leadership Institute
CatalogCivic Leadership Catalog Home Overview Young people often receive the message that they can’t make a difference. That they don’t have the knowledge, skills, or motivation to influence issues like poverty, healthcare, education, or the environment. That they’re powerless to create change. Yet there are countless stories that prove this is not the case. Four college students started a sit-in that fueled the civil rights movement, and thousands of young people powered the peaceful protests that ended legal segregation. One 13-year-old, with a group of 7th grade classmates, founded a youth-led organization that has fought against child labor and built schools and health clinics all over the world. And those are just a few examples. What power, passion, and resources do you possess? At the Civic Leadership Institute, you’ll begin your discovery! CLI students explore the complex challenges that affect our communities, and develop the knowledge, experience and leadership skills they need to make a positive impact on the world. Civic Leadership Institute participants: Serve communities in need Analyze pressing social problems and promising solutions Explore college life in an exciting city Meet with top government, business, and nonprofit leaders Build lasting friendships with bright, motivated peers Develop leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills Discover ways to make a difference in the world!

At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. Young Writers Workshop
he workshop sections are small (12 students). This allows for individual attention to each student and helps to foster the sense of belonging to a supportive learning community in which students can feel comfortable exploring new directions in their writing and thinking. Trusting one's own language and voice, learning to think for oneself and in collaboration with others— these are the qualities and skills that the workshop strives to develop. Each weekday consists of three 90-minute sessions organized as writing and discussion seminars. Workshop leaders write with their students, and there is frequent sharing of this informal writing, both in small groups and in the class as a whole. Discussions of assigned readings—mostly contemporary poems, stories, and essays—is informal and speculative. The emphasis isn't on arriving at a “correct answer” but on exploring various ideas about what a text is saying. The texts also frequently serve as starting points and models for students’ own creative writing exercises. These daily activities are complemented by evening assignments in reading, revising, and journal writing.

Camp Jabberwocky
Camp Jabberwocky
From the end of June to the end of August, Camp Jabberwocky offers children and adults with a wide range of disabilities the chance to enjoy the summer in a small family-like community – living together and enjoying jam-packed days filled with adventurous activities and experiences that are safe, empowering, exciting and fun. Campers stay between one and four weeks during which they enjoy activities and classes on campus and out and about in the community of Martha’s Vineyard. At Jabberwocky, people with different abilities form the majority in the community. Their needs become priority needs; their concerns become concerns. And in this age, when cultural and individual sense of belonging is waning, a community that works is a light of hope. Camp is the sum of all its parts! It is a strong community of people who work together, take initiative and have a lot of fun in the process. A counselor’s biggest and most important responsibility are the campers and their daily care. Each counselor is also assigned a chore that usually occurs once a day such as: cleaning bathrooms, making lunch, mopping the main cabin floors, dishes, laundry, setting tables, clearing tables and more. Counselors and campers teach the morning classes so bring your special talent and teach us all about it!

Fresh Truck
Fresh Truck
We love Boston and we’ve been committed to making it a healthier city since 2O13. It all started while Josh was working as a health educator at the MGH Charlestown Healthcare Center. He kept hearing from his families that it was difficult to shop for healthy food — at that time, the only grocery store in the neighborhood was set to be shut down for a year-long renovation. It was this experience and some in-depth research that inspired Fresh truck to rethink the traditional grocery store model, make it mobile and bring it to the people that need it the most. Since our launch in 2O13, we have sold more than $15O,OOO of fresh food, cultivated a citywide network of community health partners, and our neighborhoods have embraced us warmly. We’re hearing the stories of kids trying their first sweet potato and families preparing meals together. We have a big vision for the future of food and healthcare, and we are only just getting started.

The College of William and Mary
Pre-College Summer Program in Early American History
If you are at least a sophomore in high school, you have an opportunity this summer to travel back in time to discover early America in a unique hands-on way. For three weeks this summer, students from all sections of the country will pursue the intertwined, often tempestuous stories of Native Americans, Europeans, Africans, and their descendants by visiting the places where they lived, observing the things they touched, and immersing themselves in the saga of early American life as told by historians, archaeologists, and museum professionals. Sound intriguing? Come join us! Participants in the W&M Pre-College Program are enrolled as non-degree seeking students at the College of William & Mary. They earn 4 academic credits taking one of two history courses: HIST 217 or HIST 218. They live together in an air-conditioned dormitory on the College of William and Mary campus and take their meals in campus dining facilities. Tuition, dorm room, and meals are all covered in the cost of the program. Only Pre-College Program participants reside in the dorm, which is supervised at all times by Resident Program Assistants (RPAs). Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Family Volunteer Program
The Family Volunteer Program allows high school students and their parents to volunteer together. High school students can make a difference in a blind person’s life while gaining valuable education from the experience. We work to develop special training opportunities for teens, such as visiting a low vision support group or attending a seminar or panel discussion on Braille, guide dogs and other topics. Exposure to how people with disabilities use technology is particularly important, so that teen volunteers understand how technology can level the playing field in the workplace, education, and daily life. This initiative provides meaningful service opportunities to teens, and the opportunity for the teens to become comfortable working with someone with a disability, an experience that will carry over into their adult lives and careers. The Family Volunteer Program is also a chance for parents and teens to spend time volunteering together, learning about vision loss and helping others in their community. While these courses are online, students do not spend all of their work time looking at a computer. Schedule: Monday, June 18-Friday, August 3 (seven weeks) GOA courses are both interactive (students will be required to log in multiple times a week to participate in discussions and collaborate on projects) and intensive (students should anticipate spending 10-12 hours a week on coursework, including a weekly video chat). AI4All
The AI4All @ Carnegie Mellon summer program provides opportunities for students from underrepresented communities to study artificial intelligence with full-time faculty, staff and researchers who are leaders in the field. There is a diversity crisis in AI and computer science: a homogenous group of technologists are building AI solutions for a diverse population. The global economic impact of AI is expected to reach $15.7 trillion by 2030, but less than 14% of AI researchers globally are women, and Black and Hispanic men and women make up less than 11% of people employed in U.S. STEM jobs. This lack of diversity results in biased AI products that, at best, don’t serve everyone. At worst, they actively harm underrepresented groups. It's crucial to take action to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to guide the creation of AI as a tool for good. AI4ALL is a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion in AI education, research, development and policy. One way they accomplish that is by offering summer programs at 11 universities across the nation, including Carnegie Mellon. The program is free, and students reside on campus, where they are immersed in hands-on learning, and develop a supportive peer network that will help them throughout their AI careers.

Sewanee: The University of the South
Pre-College Field Studies Experience
Sewanee's Pre-College Field Studies Experience is a summer residential program for talented students who are passionate about the outdoors and interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in the study of the environment. Led by full-time faculty and staff at the University of the South and utilizing its 13,000-acre campus atop the ecologically diverse Cumberland Plateau, the program provides an interdisciplinary introduction to environmental studies. Students participate in ecological exploration with senior faculty examining the plant and animal species that inhabit these ecosystems and use archeological techniques, along with GIS and GPS technology, to study how people have used and changed these ecosystems over time. Students learn how conservation strategies are currently being employed to protect the integrity of Plateau ecosystems into the future. The experience is conducted almost exclusively in the field, featuring field mapping equipment, digital photography, ecological assessment techniques and group research projects. As part of this experience, students have the opportunity to take part in a number of outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, bouldering, canoeing, caving, and mountain biking.
